Nix's Visit to the BVI

After months’ of anticipation, Nix had travelled the USA and finally came down south to visit us in the BVI. Her first evening here was spent having lots of overdue girly catch up as we knew we had a big day ahead on the Saturday – Nix’s virgin boat trip. We had sampled a new boat the previous weekend and made a good connection with a new captain – Kingfish (yes, that’s his real name).

After getting Nix an awesome matching “bikini top”, all three girls donned their outfits and headed off with the assembled boat trip crew, some savannas and brutal fruits.

The usual places were visited but of course they were much more fun with the tri-factor being reunited. The evening inevitably culminated at the Willy T where Nix had a shotski, some renowned painkillers and ofcourse, a few jumps off the top.

The next morning we woke up, exchanged Easter eggs and then made a mouth-watering brunch for some friends. The champagne was freely flowing and the rest of the afternoon was spent relaxing on the beach.

On the Monday and Nix’s last day with us, we had a somewhat bumpy ride to Virgin Gorda, which is definitely one of the best places in the BVI and therefore a must-see for Nix. Snorkeling, suntanning and exploring the caves were the order of the day. The weather was spectacular but evidently a bit too hot for Nicole’s delicate winter skin. We returned to have a lovely last dinner with Nix before she was off far too soon the next day. It was an awesome visit – thanks so much Nix…hope you enjoyed the blog about you!

The Past 2 weeks

First off, we must apologise for keeping our loyal subscribers in suspense for almost two weeks! We're sure you missed last week's update, so to make up for it we have a bumper blog edition for you this week!

Things have been pretty busy for us over the last two weeks, so we'll start with the office functions we've had:

The Deloitte cluster leaders were here to visit BVI so Mark (managing partner) had a tapas evening at his house to welcome them. We had a great turnout from the office and the food was DELICIOUS, nothing like home-made snacks when you dont have to make them yourself!
TASHLEY AT TAPAS NIGHT

TASHLEY AT TAPAS NIGHT

The day after the tapas night we had a bowling function at UP's. We proved to ourselves that Tashley may be amazing at some things, but bowling certainly isn't one of them. Basically it was a competition between us to see who could get the lowest score! Oh well, we had fun and ensured that people at least had something to laugh at during the function.

After spending some time with James and Graham on their boat and seeing them wakeboard, we were keen to give it a try ourselves. Having both failed miserably at water skiing, we weren’t getting our hopes up despite all of the reassuring suggestions and tips from the boys. Off we went and they took us to a nice and flat area which is perfect for beginners. Tash was first up and after getting accustomed to the board, gave it a go and got up first try!

Ash also had some great runs and we were both so thrilled we could do it.

A few falls were had but we will definitely be going again to attempt the flips and 180s we know are in us! It also proved to be a great workout as we were stiff for days afterwards!

After wakeboarding, we went to Scrub Island for some lunch and to relax in their pool and Jacuzzi. Scrub Island basically consists of a resort and it was nice to see it and use their waterslide, pool and Jacuzzi to soothe our muscles after wakeboarding.

All in all, a great day on the boat!

This year saw the 40th anniversary of the BVI Spring Regatta.

Rumour had it that a whole host of celebs were in town but unfortunately, we did not spot any. It lasted 5 days and was really festive as lots of people were in from other islands.

Deloitte got involved by selling tickets and on the final day, we offered to bartend which was a lot of fun.

After gaining momentum and learning how to pour the infamous BVI shots, we were true professionals…except when someone came with a strange accent and they got a strawberry daiquiri instead of a rum and coke - just meant more drinks we were “forced” to consume.

It ended off with an amazing fireworks display that we did not think BVI was capable of, really great to see it.

The last week Barbara, Ash’s mom, was here to visit. She easily fitted into the relaxed lifestyle and even started getting used to our roads. We took her to Scrub Island for a delicious “Build a Burger Spectacular” with live music which was really nice.

A More Relaxed Weekend in the BVI and a Beach Picnic

On Friday, we went out to celebrate the big 3-0 with Noku.

Her celebrations started off at one of our favourite joints, the South African bar, the Watering Hole. We enjoyed some refreshing Savannas here but were disappointed when trying to order Sprinboks (peppermint liquor and Baileys for those non-Saffa readers) as the barlady did not know what we were talking about – evidently not completely South Africanised.

After some delicious birthday cake, the party moved to the Dove but the previous weekends and continuous busy activity had caught up to us and we opted for an early night and headed home.

On Saturday we went to Peter Island, another BVI Island. See the map below for ease of reference of all our travels.

A quick ferry ride and no customs was bliss!

Peter Island has a big resort on it which looks ultra fancy. We carried on walking past the couch-type beach loungers to the pleb area of the beach but it was just as beautiful. The day was spent relaxing in the sun, playing Frisbee and enjoying the beautiful sun and gorgeous seas that we have become accustomed to. We also enjoyed some cocktails and lunch at the resort before heading home. Great way to start the weekend.

On Sunday there was another BVi triathlon, this time slightly longer then the 1st one. Tash swam for a Deloitte team consisting of Aurelie (Bike) and George (Run). The swim went really well although it was definately a lot tougher to beat the boys this time as the course was longer and fitness was hampered a bit by the last 3 party weeks! But still they were beaten and not happy about it! We landed up coming 3rd overall and again the event proved that some things are worth getting out of bed before 7am for (barely worth it though!).

After the triathlon we spent a perfect day on the beach - this time the one closest to us, Cane Garden Bay. Guyp and Dave brought their dogs Jager and Blackie along and we spent quite some time trying to coax them into the water - which both of them hate. It ended off with one of the most spectacular sunsets we've experienced since we got here. A big call - but check out this photo as proof!

On Monday night Ash prepared the most amazing picnic as Tash's birthday present (not much to buy on island in the way of presents). We had delicious food and a custom made cake while sitting on the beach watching the sunset and then the stars.

A visitor from South Africa, Tash’s birthday

and another day on the water

But before we dive in to our latest weekend adventures, we need to introduce you to the third JIT who has joined us from Zimbabwe. Her name is Patience and she was supposed to be with us from the start but due to work permit issues she landed up coming 2 months later.

PATIENCE

PATIENCE

This past week was quite an exciting one as we had Graeme come and visit from South Africa. Graeme is the one who organises the whole JIT programme. He then gets the awesome job of going around to the JIT locations and checking how things are running. On his first night here we went out for dinner at Cruzin and then could not resist a stop in at Bomba to introduce him to Bomba punch.

The next night he came over to see our place and Ash made delicious chicken pie. Thursday night we had dinner with the three of us JIT girls, Graeme, Sasha (HR at Deloitte) and Mark (our managing partner). We went to Bananakeet which is this restaurant with the most awesome view.

Whats not to love about a place like that??

Friday was Tash's birthday and although we are far from home it was still a really special day (especially thanks to Ash and her sneaky ways).
We all went to sky bar (a sushi place near our house, also with gorgeous views). Unfortunately we arrived too late to see the views (we were the last people to arrive, oops!!). Apart from a really annoying manager at Sky bar dinner was really great and it was nice to have everyone all together.

After Sky we headed off to the Grand and thanks to Guyp and the french canadians, far too much Jager was consumed! But besides that it was loads of fun!

The next day we took a while to get going but ended up on James' boat sometime round 1.

After the caves we went to try wakeboard. After James had shown us how it was done Graeme tried. He got up on his first time but unfortunately something was wrong with the boat so Tashley didn't get to try (not that we minded, wakeboarding does not look easy). So we went to Peter island and chilled on the beach untill it was time to go home.

St Thomas Weekend

Turtle loving, parasailing and more

With so much to offer so close to Tortola, we thought it was definitely time for a proper visit to St Thomas. Being another long weekend, we decided to make the most of it and took the ferry to St Thomas on Saturday morning. Our friend GuyP joined us to escape “island fever” and he was the perfect addition as Tashley did not need to take too many self portrait shots anymore.

After finally getting through customs and picking up our rental car, we made our way for some lunch…yep, you guessed it, McDonalds it was.

After a few more stops, we made our way to the other side of the island where we were staying. We lounged by the pool and in the “hotter than a bath” hot tub and had some poor cocktails before deciding it was time to make our way out.TASHLEY IN HOTEL POOL

On Saturday morning, we made our way back into town for some turtle loving. After a relaxed sail ride with some bronzing in the sun, we arrived at Buck Island where juvenile turtles (6 months to a year) feed on the grassbeds at the bottom of the sea.

It was absolutely amazing to be so close to the turtles, with some swimming right in front of you. We also saw a sting-ray and some other fish by the reef but the turtles were definitely the best and we were very lucky to see so many. The sail ride back was great as rum punch was added to the menu which was much better than the fruit punch served on the way over!

If you ever want to get an awesome view of all the islands in the USVI, parasailing is definitely the way to do it! It’s much less scary then it looks and you can do it in Tandem so Tashley did not have to separate and could have a great chat 600 feet in the air.
PARASAILING

PARASAILING

Everything sort of feels like it’s in slow motion while you’re up in the air. Before take-off, they strap you onto the parachute while you are sitting on the boat, then as the boat gains momentum you get lifted off into the air really gently. Landing is just as easy, you simply lift your legs up and get deposited back into your starting position. It feels like you’re in the air for ages but in reality it’s about 10 minutes.

Definitely something worth doing though, the view is spectacular. Tash got to go twice as Guyp needed a partner so she took the camera up with her and got some awesome shots while in the air.

After parasailing we headed off to the Coral World Ocean Park (Aquarium). We weren’t expecting much as it is an island aquarium but it was a bit (not much) bigger than anticipated. There were the usual tanks with fish and this really cool tunnel where they have kind of built into the sea so you go down and its like a big fish tank except the fish you see are in the open water (they all hover around because they get fed).
